Seasonal News
I am sure everyone will have enjoyed playing this year despite the problems brought on by the never ending rain
The Green
The very wet winter of 2023/4 made the preparation of the green for the season more difficult. The season did not get off to a good start because of the rain. After just the first game at home we felt the playing surface was unsafe and with the co- operation of other clubs we played our earlier games away, giving us time to sort out our drainage problem.
Initially we drilled 24 deep drainage holes of 4 inch diameter and another 15 holes of 2 Inch diameter across the green at the far end. Once the weather improved we were able to play the rest of the season for our home games. Our thanks go the members of our Tuesday club for all the work undertaken.
More work by the Tuesday club during the winter 2024/5 has installed a land drain along the length of the green which it is hoped will further help.
The short mat bowls evening 23rd Feb 2025
This event was staged at the Nutley Memorial Hall on 23 February and was a great success.
It was a social event- not at all competitive and a bit of fun. We had 2 mats down and all the equipment needed and we all “had a go”.
Alf Sayers Trophy Report
13th July 2025
Organising this Triples competition started, as usual in January. However, the weather is something we cannot organise but we lived in hope for a decent day. This year it was beyond our expectations as our preparation day and the day itself could not have been better as these were the last 2 days of the third heatwave we had experienced this year. Unbroken sunshine.
The club looked great with all the gazebos erected, giving essential protection to all the players and those officiating during the day. The 12 teams from various clubs started to arrive and select their positions in readiness for the start at 10am. Six of the teams formed the blue group with the other six as the red group.
Each group started with the traditional spider to win a bottle of wine. After that the competition got under way with games, mainly of 5 ends being played, first by the blue group and alternating with the red group throughout the day.
The competitors were encouraged to take on fluids throughout the day and water, tea and coffee were freely available all day.
Picnic lunches were provided by the hard working club members, plus desserts and later in the day a delicious cream tea was enjoyed by all.
There was a large raffle and a competition to guess the total number of shots played and here the club very much appreciated the support for these as well as the number of prizes donated.
The scorers recorded all the details during the day so that eventually they could reveal the best team from the blue and red groups, to play in a three end final. Those teams were Sue Walter (The Losers) from Buxted Park and Richard Cooke (The Hillbillies) from Burgess Hill. After a very good final the Hillbillies collected the trophy from Vivien Woods, the daughter of Alf Sayers, our former greenkeeper.
The green played very well, everyone appeared to have a great day. We thanked all those who helped, the scorers, the liquid providers and the ladies for such good food, and all the participants for their continued support for Nutley Bowling Club. Most of all we need to thank Peter Lambert, our Chairman, for organising the whole event on behalf of the Club. by Mike Evans

The annual quiz evening 5th October 2024
Once again Mike Evans organised this annual event at the Nutley Memorial Hall on 5th October. This has been a popular event in our calendar for many years and has always been supported by many other bowls clubs as well as friends and family. This year we had 18 teams which is the maximum number we can accommodate in the hall. The evening went well, was very enjoyable with sandwiches provided in the half way interval. The raffle also helped the evening along.
